Before you send money

Six things to line up before you release payment on a high-value car.

1. 1.Use an escrow service for payment, especially when buying from far away.
2. 2.Make sure the title and any loan on the car will be handled before money is released. Ask how the payoff will work.
3. 3.Get insurance lined up before the car is yours.
4. 4.Plan transport. For high-value cars, many buyers choose an enclosed trailer.
5. 5.Plan the handoff: all keys, manuals, documents, the bill of sale and the odometer statement.
6. 6.Review this report's open questions and the shop's findings with the seller first.
