10 Things Buyers Overlook When Buying a Luxury Car
Before you spend serious money on a high-value car, make sure you've checked what most buyers miss.
- 01
A cold start.
Sellers often warm the car up before you arrive, which hides starting problems and engine noises. Ask to start it cold.
- 02
Tire age, not just tread.
A low-mile car can have 10-year-old tires that look new but need replacing. Check the date code on the sidewall.
- 03
How many keys come with it.
A missing key on an exotic can cost thousands to replace, and it makes a difference when it's time to resell.
- 04
Whether the warranty transfers.
Remaining coverage may not pass to you, or may need paperwork filed on time. This is important. Find out before you buy.
- 05
Big service coming due.
Some exotics need major services that cost thousands. Know what's due before you buy, not after. If a big service is due, negotiate the price down by that amount.
- 06
Liens on the title.
A lien can be hidden and only found months later. If a lender still has a claim on the car, it can become your problem.
- 07
Where the car has lived.
Titles from flood-prone areas, cars from snowy regions driven on salted roads, and cars that have moved through several states deserve a closer look.
- 08
Open recalls.
Unfixed recalls are common on used cars. Check before you buy.
- 09
Modifications.
Aftermarket parts can void the warranty, raise insurance costs or hurt resale value.
- 10
Factory books, tools and accessories.
On collector cars, the original manuals, tool kit, car cover and window sticker can make a real difference in value.
